FROMSIALKOT.COM: Can you tell us about your early life and family background?

I was born into a humble family in Sialkot.  My father, a dedicated teacher, worked tirelessly to raise our family, which included three brothers and three sisters.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: How did your father’s profession influence your values and approach to education?

My father’s profession as a teacher had a profound impact on me.  He instilled in me the values of hard work, dedication, and the importance of education. Growing up in an environment where learning and teaching were highly valued, I developed a deep appreciation for knowledge and its role in personal growth and success.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: Could you describe your educational journey?

I pursued my education upto intermediate in Sialkot, where I laid the foundation for my academic journey. As I advanced, my commitment to excellence became evident, and I continued to excel in my studies.  My thirst for knowledge and dedication to my educational pursuits led me to Hailey College of Commerce in Lahore, where I embarked on my B.Com journey.

At Hailey College of Commerce, I was not content with just attending classes; I was driven to stand out academically.  My diligence paid off, as I not only graduated with a B.Com degree but also received the highest honor – a gold medal – in 1986, a testament to my unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

Throughout my academic career, I was fortunate to be the recipient of numerous merit scholarships.  These scholarships not only alleviated the financial burden of my education but also served as a source of motivation to perform at my best.  With each passing exam, I consistently demonstrated my ability to surpass expectations, achieving remarkable results.

Following my B.Com achievement, I pursued an MBA from the prestigious University of the Punjab, further expanding my horizons and deepening my knowledge in the world of business and management.  My academic journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge, a commitment to excellence, and the support of merit scholarships that fueled my educational success.

In addition to my outstanding academic achievements, I was actively engaged in a range of extracurricular activities that enriched my overall educational experience.  I was a multifaceted individual who balanced my academic pursuits with a passion for debates, cricket, storytelling, drama production, drawing, and handcrafting. These activities allowed me to develop a diverse skillset and interests.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: Can you share a significant moment or experience from your early education that left a lasting impression on you?

One particularly memorable experience from my early education was when my teacher in Class-I gave me a cash prize of Rs.1/- for my exceptional handwriting.  It was a moment of validation that fueled my determination to excel academically.  This recognition motivated me to continue striving for excellence throughout my educational journey.  In addition to this early recognition for my handwriting, I later received an award for being the top student in my class, further solidifying my commitment to academic excellence.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: How did your career in banking begin, and what were the key milestones?

My banking career started in 1989. Over the years, I held various positions in branch banking, credit management, trade financing, and operational transactions. Each role brought new challenges and opportunities, helping me grow both personally and professionally.  I also delved into administration and compliance, where I learned about the importance of adhering to regulatory requirements and maintaining high ethical standards.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: Can you highlight some of your career achievements?

Throughout my career, I focused on team building, team mobilization, strategy formulation, motivation, and training. I had the privilege to work for esteemed institutions like NIT, BOP, MCB, and ABL, reaching the position of Chief Anti Money Laundering Officer at ABL. My journey has been marked by numerous achievements, rewards, accolades, and honors, but my primary motivation has always been working with honor and pride.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: Over your extensive career in banking, you’ve acquired expertise in various areas. Could you detail the specific skills and experiences you’ve developed?

Absolutely. My career in banking has allowed me to cultivate a diverse skill set and gain experience across multiple domains. Here are some of the key areas where I’ve honed my skills and gathered valuable experience:

Branch Banking: I began my career in customer-facing roles, which instilled in me essential interpersonal skills, the ability to manage financial transactions, and the importance of building trust with clients.

Credit Management: Managing credit portfolios required me to analyze creditworthiness, make informed lending decisions, and mitigate risks effectively. This experience enhanced my financial acumen and risk assessment skills.

Trade Financing and Operational Transactions: I navigated the complexities of international trade, ensuring seamless transactions for clients. This role demanded meticulous attention to detail and a thorough understanding of global financial markets.

Administration and Compliance: My experience in administration and compliance emphasized structured processes, adherence to regulatory requirements, and upholding the highest standards of ethics and governance.

Management and Leadership: Throughout my career, I held leadership positions that required effective team building, mobilization, and strategy formulation. Motivating teams with a focus on character and competency was central to my leadership style.

Training and Development: I strongly believe in the importance of continuous learning and training. I developed training programs with indigenous content and materials to empower team members with the knowledge and skills they needed to excel in their roles.

These skills and experiences collectively contributed to my holistic understanding of the banking industry and its various facets.  They allowed me to approach challenges with a well-rounded perspective and to drive success in both personal and team endeavors.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: In your role as Chief Anti Money Laundering Officer at ABL, you handled a critical aspect of banking. What were the key challenges you faced in this position, and how did you address them?

Being the Chief Anti Money Laundering Officer presented unique challenges, primarily centered around regulatory compliance and ensuring the bank’s financial integrity. I had to navigate through evolving regulations, manage complex transactions, and ensure that our operations met the highest standards of integrity. To address these challenges, I implemented rigorous compliance measures, invested in staff training, and promoted a culture of ethical conduct.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: Can you share an example of a particularly challenging situation you faced in your banking career and how you applied your skills and experience to overcome it?

One of the most challenging situations I encountered was during a period of regulatory change and increased scrutiny in the industry. Compliance requirements became more stringent, and the demand for operational transparency was higher than ever.  Leveraging my experience in administration and compliance, I led a team in implementing comprehensive compliance measures, revamping our processes, and training staff to meet the new standards. It was a complex task that required drawing from my skills in team mobilization, administration, and compliance to ensure the bank continued to operate with the utmost integrity and adherence to regulations.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: Reflecting on your career, what was the most rewarding aspect of your journey in the banking sector?

The most rewarding aspect of my banking career has been the opportunity to build and lead successful teams.  Witnessing the growth and development of individuals under my guidance and seeing the positive impact we could make as a collective has been immensely fulfilling.   It is not just about achieving professional milestones but also about the relationships and shared accomplishments along the way.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: You mentioned that you draw inspiration from Sufia Karams. How have their teachings influenced your management philosophy?

The wisdom of Sufia Karams has significantly impacted my approach to management. They emphasized serving others, selflessness, and the development of human potential.  I believe in fostering a culture of empathy, cooperation, and ethical conduct within organizations. I consider success to be the result of not just financial gains but also the growth and fulfillment of team members. Their teachings guide me in leadership, team building, and strategy formulation.

FROMSIALKOT.COM: You’ve recently retired. Can you share your vision for the impact you hope to make in your post-retirement endeavors?

In my post-retirement phase, I aspire to give back to the industry and society through training and mentorship. I want to share my experiences, knowledge, and management philosophy with the next generation. My vision is to inspire and guide individuals to achieve their full potential, both in their professional and personal lives. I believe in the power of education and self-improvement, and I hope to be a catalyst for positive change.
